The performance has ended and the theatre is emptying. It's not going very quickly. The audience was comfortably spread out throughout the auditorium, but now they are standing in line like sheep, waiting to exit one by one through the door. A narrowing leads to congestion, a delay to a traffic jam. At least, that's how it works with theatregoers, sheep and cars.

More cars lead to more traffic jams, which call for more roads, which in turn encourage more cars. This self-perpetuating phenomenon can be mitigated by driving closer together when a traffic jam threatens to form, rather than braking and increasing the distance between vehicles, as is customary. Cars equipped with thick rubber bumpers all around would offer a solution. Just like bumper cars at the fair. No one would be afraid of tailgating. A narrowing of the road would compress the traffic flow, causing cars to accelerate.

Traffic like water: if you squeeze the end of a water hose, the water sprays out with more force. Traffic like air: if you purse your lips, you hear a higher tone.

Chi behaves like water and air. Compression makes it flow faster.

The transition areas between the three fundamental body cavities determine the speed of circulation. They function as valves. If they are closed slightly, the speed increases. If so much tension builds up in the intermediate areas that the valves are effectively closed, circulation stops.

IIn the straight sections of one of the longer channels of chi, the zu yang ming meridian, circulation flows easily. This can be compared to traffic on a straight road, or water in a canalised river.

However, curves create turbulence and possibly stagnation. Nevertheless, chi finds its way where it cannot go. Ants never get stuck in traffic jams.

Study the winding path of the zu yang ming channel at the level of the collarbones, in the transition area between the upper and middle cavities. And do the same for the one at the bottom of the rib cage, between the middle and lower cavities. A third sharp bend in the meridian can be found at the bottom of the lower cavity, at the level of the groin.

De voorstelling is afgelopen en het theater loopt leeg. Het schiet niet erg op. Het publiek zat comfortabel verspreid door de hele zaal, maar nu staan ze als schapen in de rij te wachten om een voor een door de deur naar buiten te gaan. Een vernauwing leidt tot verstopping, een vertraging tot een file. Tenminste, zo gaat dat bij theaterbezoekers, schapen en auto’s.

Meer auto’s leidt tot meer files en dat vraagt om meer wegen, wat op zijn beurt weer uitnodigt tot meer auto’s. Dit zichzelf voedende fenomeen kan worden afgezwakt door, zodra er een file dreigt te ontstaan, dichter bij elkaar te gaan rijden, en niet zoals gebruikelijk is, te remmen en meer afstand te nemen. Auto’s uitgerust met rondom een dikke rubberen stootring zouden hiervoor een uitkomst bieden. Precies, zoals botsautootjes. Niemand zal dan angst hebben om te bumperkleven. Een vernauwing van de weg zal het verkeerslichaam in elkaar drukken, en de auto’s zullen hierdoor juist gaan versnellen.

Het verkeer als water: knijp je in het uiteinde van de waterslang, dan spuit het water er met meer kracht uit. Het verkeer als lucht: tuiten de lippen, dan hoor je een hogere toon.

Chi gedraagt zich als water en als lucht. Compressie doet het sneller stromen.

De overgangsgebieden tussen de drie fundamentele lichaamsholtes zijn bepalend voor de snelheid van circulatie. Ze functioneren als ventielen. Worden ze iets dichtgedraaid, dan verhoogt de snelheid. Verzamelt zich zo veel spanning in de tussengebieden, als het ware dat de ventielen worden dichtgedraaid, dan stopt de circulatie.

In de rechte gedeelten van een van de langere geleidingsbanen van chi, de zu yang ming-meridiaan, verloopt de circulatie met gemak. Te vergelijken met verkeer op een rechte weg, of water in een gekanaliseerde rivier.

Bochten creëren echter turbulentie, en mogelijk stagnatie. Echter, chi kruipt waar het niet gaan kan. Mieren staan nooit in de file.

Bestudeer het bochtige traject van de zu yang ming-geleidingsbaan ter hoogte van de sleutelbenen, in het overgangsgebied tussen de bovenste en de middelste holte. En doe hetzelfde voor dat aan de onderzijde van de ribbenkast, tussen de middelste en de onderste holte. Een derde scherpe buiging van de geleidingsbaan vind je aan de onderzijde van de onderste holte, ter hoogte van de liezen.

The lesson consists of a series of simple Taoist exercises with a deep effect in the link of body-energy-mind. Practice cultivates structural alignment, the perception of the internal universe and consciousness. They consist on a diverse set of preparation practices, the eight still postures (zhan zhuang) and stretches, the 'eight pieces of brocade' (ba duan jin).

Practise ‘gathering’ one's vital forces. And initiate movement with minimal effort or energy loss. One seed can inspire us in developing the skill of ‘storing energy’. Within a seed, life force is held together in an optimally compressed state. In fact, one seed contains the whole tree. We approach the skill of 'gathering' at several levels and always address and stabilise the physical. And gradually build attunement with more subtle layers, such as energy and mind.

Imagine an earthworm with only three compartments. Rotate the whole 90 degrees, add limbs, and voilà, the energetic functionality of a human body in a reduced form. Three fundamental cavities are separated from each other and connected by intermediate areas with a regulating sluice function. The top of the structure is formed by the fontanelle, the bottom by the perineum.

Between the chest and abdominal cavities lies the respiratory diaphragm, which ensures dynamic physical interaction between the two. The diaphragm is a closing muscle plate that is primarily responsible for breathing through rhythmic alternation of contraction and relaxation. At the same time, its constant movement provides an essential stimulus to the functioning of the abdominal organs. Two of the most important blood vessels – the aorta and vena cava – and the oesophagus pass through the diaphragm.

There is no single structure comparable to the diaphragm between the head and chest cavities. When we refer to a ‘throat diaphragm’, we are referring to the body parts related to the complexity of the swallowing function: the upper oesophageal sphincter, tongue, palate and epiglottis, as well as the jaw and jaw muscles. The body parts involved in speech also belong to this diaphragm-like structure.

Chinese medical and martial traditions recognise a functional centre in each of the three cavities, called 'dan tian', 丹田. Just below the centre of the abdominal cavity lies the 'lower dan tian', xia dan tian, 下丹田. In the centre of the chest cavity is the 'middle dan tian', zhong dan tian, 中丹田. And just above the centre of the head cavity is the 'upper dan tian', shang dan tian, 上丹田.

In most chi kung traditions, in Eastern internal martial arts, as well as in Buddhist meditation techniques, the lower dan tian plays a crucial role. Beginners are advised to anchor a large part of their attention in that area – in posture and movement, in success and failure, during training and in everyday life. Advanced practitioners are advised to return to the instructions for beginners time and again.

The pelvic diaphragm, of which the perineum is the superficial part, closes off the bottom of the abdominal cavity. The top of the cranial cavity is formed by the fontanelle, which is still open and soft in newborn babies.

The three dan tian are located on the central axis of the body. This is the imaginary line connecting the fontanel to the perineum, just in front of the spine. It connects seven points that are essential for chi kung practice. From bottom to top: the centre of the perineum, the lower dan tian, the centre of the diaphragm, the middle dan tian, the centre of the 'throat diaphragm', the upper dan tian and the centre of the fontanelle. The central axis is called chong mai in traditional Chinese medicine. We will return to this later in this chapter.

Tussen de borst- en buikholte ligt het adem-diafragma, dat zorgt voor een dynamische fysieke interactie tussen beide. Tegelijk geeft het door zijn constante beweging een essentiële stimulans aan de werking van de buikorganen. Twee van de belangrijkste bloedbanen - aorta en vena cava - en de slokdarm passeren het diafragma.

Tussen de hoofd- en borstholte bevindt zich geen eenduidige, met het middenrif te vergelijken structuur. Wanneer we toch spreken van een ‘keel diafragma’ refereert dit aan de complexiteit van de slikfunctie: de bovenste slokdarmsfinxter, tong, het gehemelte en het strotklepje, evenals kaak en kaakspieren. Ook de structuren in deze regio die betrokken zijn bij de spraak, behoren bij dit diafragma.

De Chinese medische en martiale tradities onderkennen in elk van de drie holtes een functioneel centrum, dat ‘dan tian’, 丹田 wordt genoemd. Van onder naar boven: het midden van het perineum, de onderste dan tian, het midden van het middenrif, de middelste dan tian, het midden van het ‘keel-diafragma’, de bovenste dan tian en het midden van de fontanel. De centrale as wordt in de traditionele Chinese geneeskunde chong mai, genoemd. Later in dit hoofdstuk zullen we daarop terugkomen.

Transport your thoughts to the origin of existence, to the beginning of the unimaginably long process of evolution. The very first life forms consisted of a single cell, without a central nucleus. Single-celled organisms with a nucleus would not appear until two billion years later. A tiny lump of life, surrounded by a wafer-thin membrane, separating and connecting the outside world and the inside world, and in the middle a nucleus.

While Western medical and biological sciences investigated the material and biochemical properties of cells in order to shed light on the mystery of life, Eastern empirical science focused on a fundamental life function found in all living beings: pulsation. It is the rhythmic alternation of tension and relaxation, of contraction and expansion, the succession of inhalation and exhalation, the dynamic ability to adapt to ever-changing environments and circumstances. Pulsation can be found in all their body parts, all their organs, tissues and cells.

The fundamental phenomenon of pulsation is captured by the Chinese character chi, 氣. Without chi, matter is lifeless. Without matter, chi cannot manifest itself.

Chi is the central theme in Chinese natural sciences, traditional medicine and martial traditions. Developing sensitivity to chi is a prerequisite for every practitioner of the aforementioned disciplines. But where to focus? Develop sensitivity to what? As a student, one may have the misconception that chi is an extraordinary quality, a mystical property that can only be perceived with a special sensitivity. The reality is simpler.

When a party, a training course or a public transport network is organised in an exemplary manner, this largely escapes the notice of those who is involved in it. Good organisation seems self-evident. A well-functioning liver or healthy teeth do not attract attention, and in such cases it is quite normal to be barely aware of their existence and flawless functioning. Only when the chi is blocked, only when the level of chi is low, and this manifests itself as pain, fatigue or discomfort, does it become apparent to the consciousness. Chi is therefore not a mysterious quality. It is the background noise of well-being. To perceive chi, one need look no further than everyday life.

From a single-celled organism to a sea anemone is a giant evolutionary leap. The complexity of an anemone or jellyfish is incomparable to that of microscopic pioneers of life. What remained the same, however, is the unambiguous rhythm, the archaic pulsation.

As single-celled microorganisms evolved, they grew larger. Having a centralised organisation was no longer enough to withstand the challenges and dangers of the environment. The larger whole was split into smaller parts, each with a degree of autonomy.

A large country with a single central capital can easily take concerted action when circumstances require it. For a decentralised country, this is not a given. It takes time and tact to get everyone on the same page. On the other hand, local autonomy leads to greater sensitivity and a more finely tuned ability to adapt.

An earthworm exhibits a combination of both. Its body consists of a multitude of virtually identical segments, each pulsating around a local centre. An orchestration creates an accordion-like movement of the whole, a rhythmic interplay of all parts.

The segments of the earthworm, or metameres, are separated from each other by thin connecting pieces called septa. These separations enable the segments to pulsate individually and, from there, to produce a collective peristaltic movement.

The septa are permeable to bodily fluids, blood, nerve pathways and the long intestinal system. The latter bears a strong resemblance to the external form of the earthworm. Pulsation of one propels it through its environment – which is also its food source. Pulsation of the other propels that same environment – or more precisely, the part that serves as its food – through it.

Two in one. An outer worm and an inner one hidden inside.

At the front of an earthworm’s body is its mouth. This guides the body’s crawling movement through the soil, which it leaves ploughed. The same mouth allows soil into its intestines, which is then digested and excreted through its anus, located in the very last segment.

Verplaats je gedachten naar de oorsprong van het bestaan, naar het begin van het onvoorstelbare lange proces van evolutie. De allereerste levensvormen bestonden uit één cel, nog zonder een centrale kern. Eencelligen met een kern zouden pas na twee miljard jaar verschijnen. Een minuscuul klompje leven, omgeven door een flinterdun membraan, als afscheiding en raakvlak van buiten- en binnenwereld, en in het midden een nucleus, een kern.

Terwijl de westerse medische en biologische wetenschappen de materiële en biochemische eigenschappen van een cel onderzochten om zo het raadsel van het leven te belichten, richtte de oosterse empirische wetenschap zich op een fundamentele levensfunctie die in alle levende wezens te vinden is: pulsatie. Het is de ritmische afwisseling van spanning en ontspanning, van samentrekking en uitzetting, de opeenvolging van inademing en uitademing, het dynamische vermogen tot aanpassing aan de immer veranderende omgeving en omstandigheden. Pulsatie is te vinden in al hun lichaamsdelen, al hun organen, weefsels en cellen.

Het fundamentele fenomeen van pulsatie wordt gevat door het Chinese karakter chi, 氣. Zonder chi is de materie levenloos. Zonder materie kan chi zich niet manifesteren.

Chi is het centrale thema in de Chinese natuurwetenschappen, traditionele geneeskunde en martiale tradities. Het ontwikkelen van sensitiviteit voor chi is een vereiste voor iedere beoefenaar van voornoemde disciplines. Maar waar zich op te richten? Gevoeligheid ontwikkelen voor wat? Als student heeft deze wellicht de misvatting dat chi een buitengewone kwaliteit is, een mystieke eigenschap, die alleen met een bijzondere sensitiviteit kan worden waargenomen. De werkelijkheid is simpeler.

Wanneer een feest, een scholingstraject of een openbaarvervoersnetwerk voorbeeldig is georganiseerd, dan onttrekt dit zich grotendeels aan de waarneming van diegene die daar gebruik van maakt. Een goede organisatie lijkt vanzelfsprekend. Een goed functionerende lever of een gaaf gebit trekken geen aandacht en het is heel normaal zich in die gevallen nauwelijks bewust te zijn van hun bestaan en hun vlekkeloze werking. Pas als de chi blokkeert, pas als het niveau van chi laag is, en dit zich uit als pijn, vermoeidheid of ongemak, dan dringt het zich op aan het bewustzijn. Chi is derhalve geen mysterieuze hoedanigheid. Het is de achtergrondruis van welbevinden. Om chi waar te nemen moet vooral niet verder dan het alledaagse worden gekeken.

Van een eencellige naar een zeeanemoon is een evolutionaire reuzensprong. De complexiteit van een anemoon of een kwal is onvergelijkbaar vergeleken met de microscopische levenspioniers. Wat evenwel hetzelfde bleef, is het eenduidige ritme, de archaïsche pulsatie.

Naarmate eencellige micro-organismen evolueerden, werden ze groter. De beschikking over een gecentraliseerde organisatie was niet langer genoeg om de uitdagingen en gevaren van de omgeving te weerstaan. Het grote geheel werd opgesplitst in kleinere delen, ieder met een mate van autonomie.

Een groot land met één centrale hoofdstad kan, wanneer de omstandigheden daarom vragen, met gemak tot een samengebundelde actie komen. Voor een gedecentraliseerd land is dat geen vanzelfsprekendheid. Het kost nu eenmaal tijd en tact om alle neuzen dezelfde kant op te laten wijzen. Daarentegen leidt de lokale autonomie tot een hogere sensitiviteit en een fijner afgesteld aanpassingsvermogen.

Een regenworm laat een combinatie van beide zien. Zijn lichaam bestaat uit een veelheid aan vrijwel identieke segmenten, die elk rond een lokaal centrum pulseren. Een orkestratie zorgt voor een accordeon-beweging van het totaal, een ritmisch samenspel van alle delen.

De segmenten van de aardworm, of metameren, zijn van elkaar gescheiden door dunne tussenstukjes, de septa. Die scheidingen zorgen ervoor dat de segmenten afzonderlijk kunnen pulseren en vanuit daar tot een gezamenlijke peristaltische beweging kunnen komen.

De septa zijn wel doorlaatbaar voor lichaamsvloeistoffen, bloed, zenuwbanen en het lange darmstelsel. Dit laatste vertoont een grote gelijkenis met de uitwendige vorm van de regenworm. Pulsatie van het ene laat hem door zijn omgeving - tevens zijn voedsel - voortbewegen. Pulsatie van het andere stuwt diezelfde omgeving - of preciezer, het gedeelte dat hem dient als voedsel - door hem heen.

Twee in een. Een uiterlijke worm en daarin verstopt een innerlijke.

Aan de voorzijde van het lichaam van een aardworm bevindt zich een mond. Die leidt de kruipbeweging van het lichaam door de aarde, die hij doorploegd achterlaat. Diezelfde mond laat de aarde toe in zijn darmen, en die wordt via zijn anus, in het allerlaatste segment, verteerd achtergelaten.

Fermentation opens a fascinating world of explosive tastes, smells and colours. A world where micro-life and health are beautifully intertwined. It’s easy to step in. However, also easy to dismiss. Therefore, we are here to share our experience and guide you through the endless and sophisticated landscape of fermentation. Your cabbage can become a delicious kraut or overtime decompose into slime. Your apples can make a mineral-rich vinegar or end up molding.

The thing is: there is a choice in the way you assist and influence the natural processes of fermentation. There is much to say and learn about participating in the unavoidable processes of falling-apart and decay. Creating healthy and life-enhancing foods and beverages is something that people everywhere in the world had done for millennia.

Fermentation is at a basic level, a transformational process. Microorganisms enhance the vitality, potency and lifespan of our food. But applying fermentation is so much more - it’s culture-making.

There are parallels between fermentation and the process of ageing, breaking things down, touching the essential and gaining maturity. As a slow transformative force, fermentation reflects the capacity of letting go, the old becoming new life, the rhythms and circularity of human life. It marks the edges where humans and more-than-human meet. And inspires community and interdependence.

Dear reader,

For several years, we put a lot of time and energy into finding a new house. The old house in Amsterdam was too small to live there any longer, and for my changing health it was better to leave the city behind and find a place in more rural, green surroundings. We were always aware that this is no easy task in this day and age. Needless to say, the supply of houses is tight and the rise in prices seems to have no limit. Nevertheless, we adopted the motto 'the one who perseveres wins' and nurtured confidence in a successful outcome.

After a period of fruitless searching, in order to give things more momentum, we sold the house in Amsterdam and temporarily rented in Dalfsen. That seemed the perfect base for a further quest in the east and north of the country. But despite all the effort we put into the search, we failed to find a new house we could afford. It is a strange sensation to realise that we cannot continue in the Netherlands.

In the last few months, we took steps to swap the Netherlands for Portugal, my partner Raquel's country. We found a piece of land, with a simple house, which will be rebuilt. As it stands, we will move there next spring, and take on the challenge of building a new life in Portugal, with all that entails.

Although I have little idea whether the TREE TIME articles are read and appreciated, I have enjoyed writing about them for the past year and a half. In the coming months, I will try to continue doing so unflinchingly and with regularity. I hope the upcoming contributions to TREE TIME can continue to pique your interest.

Beste lezer,

Voor een aantal jaar hebben we veel tijd en energie in het vinden van een nieuw huis gestoken. Het oude huis in Amsterdam was te klein om daar nog langer te wonen, en voor mijn veranderde gezondheid was het beter om de stad achter te laten en een stek te vinden in meer landelijke, groene omgeving. We waren er steeds van bewust dat dit in deze tijd geen makkelijke klus is. Overbodig te zeggen dat het aanbod van huizen krap is en de stijging van de prijzen geen limiet lijkt te kennen. Desondanks adopteerden we het motto 'de aanhouder wint' en koesterden het vertrouwen in een succesvolle afloop.

Om een en ander meer vaart te geven na een periode vruchteloos zoeken, verkochten we het huis in Amsterdam en huurden we tijdelijk in Dalfsen. Dat leek de perfecte uitvalsbasis voor een verdere queeste in het oosten en noorden van het land. Maar ondanks alle moeite die we in het zoeken hebben gelegd, is het niet gelukt een nieuw huis te vinden dat we konden veroorloven. Het is een vreemde gewaarwording te realiseren dat we niet verder kunnen in Nederland.

In de laatste maanden hebben we stappen gezet om Nederland voor Portugal, het land van mijn partner Raquel, te verruilen. We vonden daar een stuk land met een eenvoudig huis, wat herbouwd gaat worden. Zoals het er nu uitziet verhuizen we er in het aankomende voorjaar naartoe, en gaan de uitdaging aan in Portugal een nieuw leven op te bouwen, met alles wat daarbij komt kijken.

Hoewel ik weinig zicht heb of de TREE TIME artikelen gelezen en gewaardeerd worden, heb ik er de afgelopen anderhalf jaar met veel plezier aan geschreven. De komende maanden probeer ik dat onverstoorbaar en met regelmaat te blijven doen. Ik hoop dat de komende bijdragen aan TREE TIME je interesse kunnen blijven wekken.

'The week begins and ends with music.' On Mondays and Fridays, a music video appears under Notes. And midweek a video or article on 'thinkers and doers'. This material comes from what I came across and collected over the years in research for lessons and training, later in developing a museum and now in preparing to write articles.

During my high school days, the content of the lessons we were offered largely passed me by. My life revolved around music. One fine day, a friend had played a tune on his guitar, and I was immediately sold. I got a guitar and joined a teacher living nearby on a weekly basis. And what a teacher it was. A seasoned jazz man who instilled in me a love of Django Reinhardt's playing. And that of Joe Pass and Wes Montgomery and the other guitar heroes. While my classmates were listening to Abba and Pink Floyd, I was trying to play jazzy chords and riffs my own. Not that I was overly talented, but music nevertheless filled my teenage years.

In those years, attempts were being made in The Hague, my home town, to pull jazz out of the doldrums. Every Sunday, a concert was organised in a tiny theatre in the city centre of The Hague. Together with my best music friend, I made sure to be there as often as possible. We knew someone in the organisation, who invariably matched us inside and made sure we could sit in the wings at the back of the stage. As young fellows, we looked up to Billy Higgins' back and saw his feet playing the hi-hat and bass drum. We saw and heard up close Dexter Gordon and Ack van Rooyen and guitarists like Wim Overgauw and Joop Scholten. 'Jazz in Pepijn' would partly form the basis of North Sea Jazz, where we could also sneak in for the first few editions.

We formed a band, which had varying line-ups, and while classmates had weekend jobs, we filled the time with rehearsals and performing regularly on Saturday nights in music bars or clubs. No pop music for us, but Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius and Tony Williams.

An even deeper connection with music grew. I must have been eighteen, participating in weekly rehearsals of the Indonesian embassy's gamelan orchestra. My ears found little grip and structure in this musical culture, and precisely because of this, it unfiltered did its job and came in. Later, when I moved to Amsterdam, I joined Ernst Heins' gamelan group for a period. Playing the mid-Javan gamelan in the evening in a quiet and sparsely lit Tropen Institute or Asian department of the Rijksmuseum was an unforgettable experience.

While several of my music friends, who did have the talent in abundance, pursued their path in the music world, I dropped out step by step. After quite a few wanderings, I found my niche. I studied shiatsu, Chinese and Japanese acupuncture and qualified in martial disciplines and chi kung. I had turned left at a crossroads, while music, had I continued with it, would have taken me on a path to the right. Listening to music remained my best daily habit, as did attending concerts at Amsterdam's Bimhuis and elsewhere. But music and chi kung practice were two separate worlds. That's just how it works in a society where all things are strictly defined, delineated and thus lose their interconnectedness. Nevertheless, I did find rhythm and timbre, melody and interplay in chi kung. Even more than I had ever been able to experience during my music years.

All this led me to find employment in a previously non-existent profession, that of chi kung instructor. It brought me into contact with people from the most diverse backgrounds and I was able to teach in several European countries. Over the years, I also regularly received invitations to teach within conservatoires and my classes attracted many singers and instrumentalists. The worlds of music and body control and self-defence thus steadily approached each other again.

The last years of my career as an instructor took me to Germany. I was asked to give clinics within an organisation where many medics and paramedics were affiliated. The initiator of this organisation, Chinese physician Jiao Guo-Rui, who died in 1997, had called his style of approach 'yang shen gong', a classical Chinese term translated as 'nourishing life'. Professor Jiao had been in close contact with grandmaster Wang Xiang-Zhai. In the last years of his life, he had been his personal physician as well as a student. I in turn had studied Wang Xiang-Zhai's tradition and style, the I Chuan, for the twenty-five years.

So now I brought my chi kung experience to the German cities I was invited to, and let myself be freely influenced by the liberal and liberating thought of 'yang shen gong'. 'Nourishing life' is by no means limited by the practice of circumscribed Chinese exercises. It includes good conversation, the daily stroll, cooking for others, writing a poem or story, or reading, and of course making or listening to music.

Fifty years have passed since the Sundays when we sat backstage watching and listening in wonder to Han Bennink and Rob Agerbeek. That's how long it took me to finally realise separating things doesn't make life any better. Chi kung cannot be done without music any more than making music without a body.

‘De week begint en eindigt met muziek.’ Op maandag en vrijdag verschijnt er onder Notes een muziek video. En midweeks een video of artikel over ‘denkers en doeners’. Dit materiaal komt uit wat ik over de jaren tegenkwam en verzamelde in de research voor lessen en trainingen, later in het ontwikkelen van een museum en nu in de voorbereiding van het schrijven van artikels.

Anders dan bij de publicatie van een nieuwe post krijg je van deze ‘muziek noten’ en ‘denkers en doeners notities’ geen automatische e-mail aankondiging. De Notes vind je op de TREE TIME homepage, als knop in de menubalk aan de bovenzijde van het scherm.

Gedurende mijn middelbareschooltijd ging de inhoud van de lessen die ons werden aangeboden, grotendeels langs me heen. Mijn leven stond in het teken van muziek. Op een goede dag had een vriendje een deuntje op zijn gitaar voorgespeeld, en ik was meteen verkocht. Ik kreeg een gitaar en vervoegde me wekelijks bij een in de buurt wonende leraar. En wat voor leraar was dat. Een doorgewinterde jazz man die me liefde bijbracht voor het spel van Django Reinhardt. En dat van Joe Pass en Wes Montgomery en de andere gitaarhelden. Terwijl mijn klasgenoten naar Abba en Pink Floyd luisterden, probeerde ik jazzy akkoorden en riffs me eigen te maken. Niet dat ik overmatig veel talent had, maar muziek vulde niettemin mijn tienerjaren.

In die jaren werd in Den Haag, mijn thuisstad, gepoogd de jazz uit het slop te trekken. Iedere zondag werd in een piepklein theater in de Haagse binnenstad een concert georganiseerd. Samen met mijn beste muziekvriend zorgde ik daar zo vaak als mogelijk bij te zijn. We kenden iemand in de organisatie, die ons steevast naar binnen matste en er voor zorgde dat we achterop het toneel in de coulissen konden zitten. Als jonge ventjes keken we tegen de rug van Billy Higgins aan en zagen zijn voeten de hihat en de bassdrum bespelen. We zagen en hoorden van dichtbij Dexter Gordon en Ack van Rooyen en gitaristen als Wim Overgauw en Joop Scholten. ‘Jazz in Pepijn’ zou mede aan de basis staan van North Sea Jazz, waar we de eerste paar edities ook naar binnen konden sneaken.

We vormden een band, die wisselende bezettingen kende, en terwijl klasgenoten weekendbaantjes hadden, vulden wij de tijd met repeteren en met regelmaat op zaterdagavonden in muziekcafé of club op te treden. Geen popmuziek voor ons, maar Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius en Tony Williams.

Er groeide een nog diepere verbondenheid met muziek. Ik zal achttien zijn geweest, en participeerde in wekelijkse repetities van het gamelan orkest van de Indonesische ambassade. Mijn oren vonden weinig houvast en structuur in deze muziekcultuur, en juist daardoor het ongefilterd zijn werk doen en binnen komen. Toen ik wat later naar Amsterdam verhuisd was, sloot ik me nog voor een periode aan bij de gamelangroep van Ernst Heins. Het in de avond bespelen van de midden-Javaanse gamelan in een stil en schaars verlicht Tropeninstituut of Aziatische afdeling van het Rijksmuseum was een onvergetelijke ervaring.

Terwijl meerdere van mijn muziekvrienden, die het talent wel in overvloed hadden, hun weg vervolgden in de muziekwereld, haakte ik stap voor stap af. Na nogal wat omzwervingen vond ik mijn stiel. Ik studeerde shiatsu, Chinese en Japanse acupunctuur en bekwaamde me in martiale disciplines en chi kung. Ik was op een kruispunt linksaf geslagen, terwijl de muziek, als ik daar mee verder was gegaan, me op een pad naar rechts zou hebben gevoerd. Luisteren naar muziek bleef mijn beste dagelijkse gewoonte, evenals concerten bezoeken in het Amsterdamse Bimhuis en elders. Maar muziek en chi kung beoefening waren wel twee gescheiden werelden. Zo werkt dat nu eenmaal in een samenleving waar alle dingen een strikte definitie krijgen, omlijnd worden en zo hun verknooptheid verliezen. Desondanks vond ik in de chi kung wel degelijk ritme en klankkleur, melodie en samenspel. Zelfs meer dan ik ooit had kunnen ervaren tijdens mijn muziek jaren.

Dat alles leidde ertoe dat ik emplooi vond in een voorheen niet bestaand beroep, dat van chi kung instructeur. Het bracht me in contact met mensen met de meest uiteenlopende achtergronden en ik kon les geven in meerdere Europese landen. In de loop van de jaren ontving ik ook met regelmaat uitnodigingen voor onderricht binnen conservatoria en trokken mijn lessen veel zangers en instrumentalisten aan. De wereld van muziek en die van lichaamsbeheersing en zelfverdediging naderden elkaar zo weer gestaag.

De laatste jaren van mijn loopbaan als instructeur voerden me naar Duitsland. Ik werd gevraagd om clinics te geven binnen een organisatie waar veel medici en paramedici waren aangesloten. De initiator van deze organisatie, de in 1997 overleden Chinese arts Jiao Guo-Rui, had zijn stijl van aanpak 'yang shen gong' genoemd, een klassieke Chinese term, vertaald als 'het voeden van het leven'. Professor Jiao had nauw contact gehad met grootmeester Wang Xiang-Zhai. In de laatste jaren van diens leven was hij zijn lijfarts èn leerling geweest. Ik had op mijn beurt voor de vijfentwintig jaar de traditie en stijl van Wang Xiang-Zhai, de I Chuan, bestudeerd.

Zo bracht ik nu mijn chi kung ervaring naar de Duitse steden waar ik uitgenodigd werd, en liet me vrijuit door de liberale en vrijmakende gedachte van 'yang shen gong' beïnvloeden. 'Het voeden van het leven' beperkt zich allerminst door de beoefening van omlijnde Chinese oefeningen. Het omvat het goede gesprek, het dagelijkse ommetje, het voor anderen koken, een gedicht of verhaal schrijven, of lezen, en uiteraard ook het maken van of luisteren naar muziek.

Sinds de zondagen dat we achterop het toneel vol verwondering zaten te kijken en te luisteren naar Han Bennink en Rob Agerbeek zijn vijftig jaar gepasseerd. Zo lang heeft het geduurd voordat ik eindelijk besefte het scheiden van de dingen het leven er niet beter op maakt. Chi kung kan net zo min zonder muziek als muziek maken zonder lichaam.

De wekelijkse chi kung lessen bestaan uit een evenwichtige combinatie van stille en dynamische oefeningen. Een combinatie van acht stille chi kung houdingen (zhan zhuang) en acht brokaat strekkingen (ba duan jin). Verschillende aspecten van lichaam en geest, beweging en leefwereld worden in de lessen met elkaar in verband gebracht.

Intussen stilte en beweging, stabiliteit en verandering, open en dicht, uitwendige en interne beweging er is ruimte. In de chi kung lessen wordt je meegenomen in simpele taoïstische oefeningen, die echter diepgang hebben. Als deelnemer belichaam je de natuurlijke processen. Je wordt aangemoedigd om wat je de tijdens de lessen leert, in je dagelijks leven te integreren. De lessen zijn toegankelijk voor deelnemers van alle niveaus.

VERBORGEN TIJD. Hoe lang kun je nog rondlummelen voordat het boarden begint? Je kijkt rond. De grote ronde plafondklok is ingepakt in een witte zak. Niets op te zien. En verderop in de vertrekhal zijn ook de andere klokken omhult. Vreemd, juist op deze plaats, een van de grote vliegvelden van Europa, waar de hoogmis van de exacte tijdsplanning wordt opgevoerd. De komst van de trein in de late 19de eeuw noopte tot het gelijkzetten van de klokken in het hele land. Fabrieken en kantoren brachten de tijd verder in het gelid. Voorheen werd die beleefd door wederkerende seizoenen en het ritme van dag en nacht. Het werd licht, het werd donker en daar tussenin, ergens halverwege, stond de zon op zijn hoogste punt. Stap voor stap werd het 'ongeveer' vervangen door 'exact' en dat was hard nodig ook, want er landt hier op Schiphol iedere minuut een vliegtuig. Stipt.

29 juli 2025. Volgens de woordvoerder werden de eerste klokken al in 2012 afgedekt. 'Vanwege oplopende onderhoudskosten.' De woordvoerder kan niet zeggen over wat voor bedragen dat gaat. Wel dat het heel complex is om de klokken lopend te houden. ... Als een van de 87 klokken stilstaat, kun je niet even de batterij vervangen. ...’De klokken repareren kost geld. Ze vervangen ook', zegt de woordvoerder. Afgedekte klokken op een luchthaven, waar mensen toch graag willen weten hoe laat het is, hebben geen nut. Schiphol heeft nu dan ook besloten het grootste deel van de klokken definitief weg te halen. 'Op plekken waar tijd cruciaal is, denk aan overstapzones of gates, komen ze terug. Op andere plekken gaan ze weg. Afgedekte klokken dragen niets bij aan de kwaliteit en reiservaring die we passagiers willen bieden.' nu.nl

VERLOREN TIJD. Het vliegtuig brengt je deze keer naar Milaan Malpensa. MXP in vliegtuigtaal. Om het even waar je naar toe vliegt, iedere reis is - op de luchthaven-code na - volkomen uitwisselbaar. Het welkoms- en veiligheidspraatje, de drankjes en het eten, de krant of een kort ongemakkelijk slaapje. De resolutie van de ervaring van de reis tussen Amsterdam en Milaan is te verwaarlozen klein. Je stapte op Schiphol uit de realiteit, om er zo meteen in Malpensa weer in terug te keren. De reis per vliegtuig verloopt in de regel vlot, je wint er tijd mee. Of is de tijd tussen opstijgen en landen juist totaal verloren, een knip uit je leven?

‘Welkom, blijf u vooral nog even zitten en houdt uw riem nog vast’, het taxi muziekje, dan zo snel als het maar door de slurf, de lange gangen door, even naar de wc, handen wassen, parfum wolk uit de duty free, bagage band, douane - je kunt het allemaal dromen, je kunt het met je ogen dicht doorlopen. De tijd onder een kopieerapparaat, van één maakt die ergens veel van, de verveling. Dan de trein naar Milano Centrale, en als je geluk hebt, en dat heb je, meteen aansluiting naar Genova en La Spezia.

GEDROOMDE TIJD. Je dommelt, het was ook vroeg opstaan vanochtend. Het laagland van Lombardije, de brug over de Po, je aandacht flakkert. De onverbiddelijke opeenvolging van gebeurtenissen vervloeit met de cadans en de gerichtheid van de trein. Wagon volgt wagon, zoals het ene moment op het vorige. De pijlvormige tijd die als een naald de gebeurtenissen als kralen aan elkaar rijgt. Zonder naald en draad zou alles zich tegelijkertijd voltrekken. Heden, verleden, toekomst, daar en hier - alles zou in een keer gebeuren, of je een emmer leeg gooit.

Wellicht droom je nu, zoals indertijd Zhuang Zhi. Over een vlinder, die zonder enige haast rondfladdert, onbekommerd, terwijl ze weet dat haar leven na een paar weken al voorbij is. Of is het juist die vlinder, die droomt. Dat ze jou is, knikkebollend in een Italiaanse trein? Je opent je ogen. Dat moeten de heuvels van Ligurië zijn.

VERSTROOIDE TIJD. Na Genova ben je weer wat helderder in je hoofd. De trein volgt de kust, mistig zacht licht, pastel kleurige villa's, druivenstokken op de flanken. En dan, onaangekondigd, een staccato afwisseling van licht en donker. Een tunnel gevolgd door uitzicht op een wonderschoon Italiaans vissersdorpje, gevolgd door weer een tunnel, en nog een ander dorpje, nog mooier dan de eerste. Ik weet niet of je het weet, dit is iconisch Italië, de Cinque Terra, bovenaan iedere zichzelf respecterende bullet list. Hier moet je geweest zijn om de rust en het authentieke leven te ervaren. Gedurende de halve minuut - het interval tussen twee tunnels in - heb je goed zicht op een volgende dorpje en op de massa's toeristen in de nauwe straatjes en om de kleine haven. Op de paden die de Cinque Terra dorpjes met elkaar verbinden staan met regelmaat files. Van reizigers, van vacationers, van zoekers naar leegte. Er zijn tijdssloten om van het ene naar het andere dorpje te kunnen wandelen, en alles wat je zo graag spontaan had willen doen, moet lang van te voren gereserveerd worden. De etymologie van 'vakantie' moet toch echt woden gezocht worden in de notie van leegte. Leegte van zorgen en leegte van tijdsdruk. Maar goed, met deze dilemma's heb jij nu niets van doen.

GELEENDE TIJD. In La Spezia heb je een uurtje. Het is nu al laat in de middag en de boemel naar Aulla laat nog op zich wachten. Buiten het station vind je een klein parkje, het mag geen naam hebben, maar het is een parkje. En wat je mooi van past komt, er staat een vrij bankje. Het doffe ritme van vliegveld, vliegtuig, station en trein zit nog in je leden, en hoe fijn is het dan om eenvoudig wat te zitten en om je heen kijken. Je kent hier niemand, niemand kent jou, je hebt geen verplichting, en de trein om mee verder te reizen is er nog niet. Was het lang geleden dat je niets om handen had en er niet nerveus van werd? Was het lang geleden dat je vrijuit kon waarnemen? Daar links van je komt een oude man aangelopen, aangeschuifeld. Een vriendelijke oude baas, grijs, licht gebogen. Voor even bevrijd van de dwangmatige onrust om te doen, kun je voorbij de beperking van het ene moment zien. Je ziet de oude man van vandaag en je ziet het jonge ventje die hij gisteren nog was. Waarom zou je de ondeugende streken en dromen en de ander de wijsheid ontzeggen? Je ziet jong in oud en oud in jong.

VERSTREKEN TIJD. In Aulla, een klein onopvallend stadje in het dal van de Magra, wordt je opgepikt. Een vitale, pezige man, zon gebruind, staat buiten het station op je te wachten, leunend tegen een jeep, die duidelijk veel heeft meegemaakt. Hij stelt zich aan je voor, nee, hij is geen Italiaan, maar eigenlijk ook toch wel. Oorspronkelijk uit Zwitserland, hij woont hier het grootste deel van zijn leven. Jullie gaan op weg en die weg verlaat het slaperige stadje, de heuvels in. Je chauffeur lijkt de route te kunnen dromen en bezuinigt niet op snelheid. Er zit niets anders op dan te vertrouwen op zijn stuurmanskunst.

Als je van opzij naar zijn handen, die losjes het stuur omvatten, kijkt, is het duidelijk dat deze werk hebben verzet. En als je ogen naar beneden dwalen, zie je dat hij auto rijdt zonder schoenen aan. Wanneer hij je zoekende ogen opmerkt, lacht hij. ‘Laatst werd ik aangehouden, routinecontrole, door de carabinieri. Dat hadden ze geloof ik nog niet meegemaakt, een chauffeur met blote voeten. Dat is niet toegestaan, signore, alstublieft, schoenen aan achter het stuur. Dat heb ik toen maar gedaan, maar je rijdt gewoon veel beter zonder, je hebt veel meer gevoel met de auto.’

Ondertussen rijden jullie door beboste heuvels, hier en daar een dorpje, groepje pratende mensen, een rivier, een brug, bomen, overal bomen. ‘Ja’, zegt hij, ‘vroeger, langer geleden was deze streek veel meer bewoond. Zoals op zoveel plekken op de wereld zijn de families naar de stad getrokken. In het dorp waar wij wonen, is het 's winters stil, dan wonen we er maar met weinig. Ja, in de zomer, dan komen ze, uit de stad, naar het familiehuis. Ferragosto, de vakantie. En zodra die afgelopen is weer terug naar de stad. Hun hart ligt hier, maar ja, hier is niets te verdienen.’

De jeep draait een bocht uit, het nauwe dal verbreedt zich en een weids uitzicht dient zich aan. In de verte verheffen steile hellingen zich uit de groene heuvels. De pieken kleuren zacht rood door het licht van de vroege avond. ‘Dat zijn de pieken van de Apuani, zegt hij, je kunt het van hieruit niet zien, maar aan de andere zijde, net onder de top, zijn de marmergroeven. Michelangelo haalde daar het witte marmer, voor zijn David, e meer. In een rechte lijn is het niet ver, Carrara, Massa, daar wordt goud geld verdient. Dat marmer gaat de wereld over. Dit hier is een andere wereld, de bergen zitten ertussen. Dit land heet de Lunigiana, het land van de maan. Het was altijd een vergeten stuk van het rijke Toscana, en dat is het eigenlijk nog steeds. Kijk daar, en hij wijst vooruit, naar een beboste helling, daar waren niet lang geleden terrassen, gerst en groente, fruitbomen. De Lunigiana liep de vorige eeuw leeg en de akkers en de dorpen ontvolkten.’

We rijden een tijd verder zonder te praten. De weg wordt smaller en nog bochtiger. De avondzon komt niet meer over de heuvels. Het groen wordt donkergroen. ‘Kijk’, zeg hij, een breed gebaar makend van links naar rechts. ‘Kastanjes, allemaal kastanjes. De hele streek is bedekt met kastanjebos, lang geleden aangeplant. Het was vroeger voor de mensen hier een belangrijke stuk van het leven. In het najaar werden de kastanjes verzameld, en gedroogd. Kastanjemeel, kastanjebrood, kastanje koekjes. Ja, het wordt nog steeds wel gedaan, maar niet op de schaal van toen. Wat had je toen? Wilde zwijnen, kastanjes en porcini. Veel van de kastanje percelen werden aan hun lot overgelaten, die verwilderden. Je zult het morgen wel zien.’

Het is gaan schemeren. De kronkelige weg en je lege maag vormen geen goede combinatie. Dan zegt je chauffeur, daar is het, dat is Casola. Je ziet een middeleeuws dorpje, als tegen een helling geplakt. En daar ligt Il Convento.

De jeep slaat rechtsaf een stoffig pad in, dat na korte tijd wordt doorkruist door een riviertje. De chauffeur twijfelt niet en stuurt de jeep het opspattende water door. Een scherpe draai en dan stijl omhoog en dan stoppen we voor het oude klooster. Hij schakelt de motor uit, we openen de portieren, stappen uit, de motor zoemt en tikt na. Het is stil.

VERDRAAIDE TIJD. Door de geschiedenis heen, in alle culturen namen bomen een speciale plek in en dat is vandaag de dag niet anders. Ja, ja, je bedoelt zeker in de vorm van timmerhout en kerstboomplantages? Ierland en Portugal waren bedekt met eikenbos, heel Europa was ooit een groot woud, en kijk nu eens. En maar petities ondertekenen om de wouden in de Amazone en op Borneo te redden, terwijl hier het continent al lang geleden van zijn bomen werd ontdaan. Natuurlijk, er zijn hier bossen, zolang de bomen maar mooi in rijen naast elkaar staan en snel recht timmerhout leveren.

Onze cultuur spiegelt zich aan de jeugd. Frisse wangen, strak lichaam, jeugdige aantrekkelijkheid. Al wat mogelijk wordt gedaan om rimpels te vermijden en het lichaam vooral zo onaangedaan mogelijk te conserveren. Stel je voor hoe het zou zijn: op alle billboards, in alle tv reclame, oude gerimpelde gezichten en lichamen om de producten aan te prijzen. Het zou zo maar kunnen, in een verre toekomst, de oude mens met zijn verweerde lichaam als na te streven ideaal.

Bij het beschouwen van bomen is dat de normale gang van zaken. Een oeroude linde, een zeldzaam oud exemplaar, een hekje er omheen, een plakkaat met daarop zijn wederwaardigheden. Dat is een bezienswaardigheid. In hoe we naar bomen kijken, is ouderdom, verwering, verwrongenheid de maat der dingen. Zeg nou zelf, je zou toch niet al de moeite doen, een lange omweg maken om een jeugdige spil te gaan bekijken, recht van leden, met een zachte gave huid, en doorschijnende blaadjes.

Hoe je zo oud wordt als die linde? In ieder geval niet door al te veel op te vallen, of te proberen nuttig te zijn.

Timmerman Shi ging naar Qi. Bij Quyu gekomen zag hij een eik als heilige boom van het altaar van de Aarde. Hij was zo groot dat duizenden runderen eronder konden schuilen. Zijn omvang was wel honderd el. Hij was zo hoog als een berg. Pas op tien vadem hoogte kwamen de eerste takken. Er waren meer dan tien zijtakken, die zo dik waren dat men er boten van kon maken.

Het stond er zo vol met kijkers dat het was alsof er markt gehouden werd. Maar de timmerman keek niet op of om, en vervolgde zijn weg zonder te stoppen. Zijn leerling echter stond stil en, nadat hij zich er vol aan had gekeken, holde hij de meester achterna, en zei: ‘Meester: sinds ik bijl en beitel heb opgenomen om u te volgen, heb ik nog nooit zulk prachtig materiaal gezien. Maar u keurt het geen blik waardig en loopt door zonder ook maar één keer te stoppen. Waarom is dat?’

‘Hou op! Praat me er niet van! Dat is overtollig hout. Maak er een boot van en hij zinkt. Een doodskist? Hij verrot meteen. Een gebruiksvoorwerp? Het egaat dadelijk kapot. Een deur? Die blijft nat van de hars. Een steunpilaar? Daar komen insecten in. Dit is hout dat nergens toe dient, dat nergens voor kan worden aangewend, en om die reden heeft die boom zo oud kunnen worden.’

Toen de meestertimmerman thuis was gekomen, verscheen de heilige eikenboom aan hem in een droom, en sprak: ‘Waar dacht je mij wel mee te vergelijken? Wilde je zeggen dat ik ‘overtollig hout’ was? Appelen, peren, mandarijnen, pomelo’s en de vruchten van andere bomen: ze worden afgerukt zodra ze rijp zijn. Daardoor worden die bomen gekwetst, hun grote takken afgebroken en hun twijgjes vernield. Dat is je hele leven narigheid ondervinden vanwege je bekwaamheden. Om die reden kan ook geen van hen zijn door de hemel bestemde levensloop volbrengen, maar sterven ze allemaal voortijdig wanneer ze pas op de helft zijn. Ze zijn het zelf die zich deze algemeen gangbare geweldplegingen op de hals halen, en met andere wezens is het ook zo gesteld. Daarom ben ik al lang geleden gaan proberen om volstrekt nutteloos te worden. Vaak kwam ik er dichtbij, en nu heb ik het bereikt. Dat is voor mij van het grootste nut. Als ik ooit enige nuttigheid gehad zou hebben, zou ik dan zo groot hebben kunnen worden? Laten we daarbij ook nog bedenken dat we allebei maar schepsels zijn. Hoe kunnen schepsels elkaar beoordelen? Hoe kan een overtollig mens zoals jij, die bovendien weldra gaat sterven, weten wat een overtollige boom is.’

De meestertimmerman werd wakker en vertelde over zijn droom. Zijn leerling zei: ‘Als het zijn doel is om nutteloos te zijn, hoe komt het dan dat hij een aardgod geworden is?’

‘Stil! Hou je mond! Dat is ook maar een soort toevlucht van hem, omdat anders zij die hem niet begrijpen kwaad van hem zouden spreken. Als hij geen aardgod was, zou hij misschien toch niet aan de bijl ontkomen! En laten we bedenken dat de manier waarop hij zichzelf beschermt anders is dan die algemeen gangbaar is. TIJDSLIJN. Je wordt al heel vroeg wakker. Alles in dit klooster ademt geschiedenis. De robuuste stenen muren, de ruïne van wat eens een kapel was, het plaveisel van het voorhof. Je weet het niet, dus fluister ik het in je oor: dit was ooit een pleisterplaats was voor pelgrims op de weg naar Rome. Zeker, alle wegen leiden daar naar toe, en hoe dichter je bij de eeuwige stad komt, hoe meer al die wegen zijn samengekomen, als aderen in de hoofdnerf van een blad.

ONBEPAALDE TIJD. Vanochtend bij het ontbijt ontmoette je de vrouw van de jeep chauffeur van gisteren. Deze laatste bleek trouwens de eigenaar te zijn van het oude klooster. Aangetroffen als een bouwval en herbouwd tot wat het nu is. Ah, daar valt het kwartje - die werkhanden, die had je tijdens de rit al opgemerkt. En deze vrouw is dus de ook de eigenaar. Haar blik is intens, haar voorkomen aards. ‘Ik ben ook niet hier geboren’, vertelde ze, maar onderhand hoor ik hier. Ik belande destijds in Italië, bij toeval, in Pontremoli, als iid van een theatergroep. Ken je Pontremoli? Het is niet ver hier vandaan, ook in de Lunigiana. In het kasteel worden de steles tentoongesteld. Vreemde, intrigerende beelden uit de prehistorie, allemaal hier in de buurt opgegraven. Zo lang wordt de Lunigiana al bewoond.

We besloten hier te blijven, en reden zonder omlijnd plan de Lunigiana door, op zoek naar een plek om ons te settelen. Als bij toeval vonden we de Convento. Half in ruïne en compleet overgroeid. We maakten een wandeling in de omgeving, kwamen in het oude kastanjebos en dat maakte het duidelijk. Dit was zonder twijfel de juiste plek om te blijven.’

‘Om in het oude kastanjebos te komen, moet je ook weten waar je te vervoegen, waar binnen te treden. Vroeger, ja vroeger, toen de streek hier bevolkt was, liepen er talloze paadjes door de bossen, over de heuvels, van dorp naar dorp. Paadjes waar in het najaar de porcini plukkers gebruik van maakten, en de kastanjeverzamelaars. Wanneer je nu zomaar op een willekeurige plek langs de weg het bos in loopt, kom je al gauw van een koude kermis terug. Bramen, prikkelplanten, taaie struiken, er is geen doorkomen aan. Ga er vooral kijken. Ik kan zelf niet met je mee vandaag, maar mijn kinderen zijn hier en kunnen je de weg wijzen.’

Zoals Harry Potter zich op King's Cross, perron negen driekwart, diende te vervoegen en daar op nogal vreemde wijze een muur moest slechten, om naar Zweinstein te kunnen reizen, zo bevindt zich de entree naar het oude bos ook op een onverwachte plek.

VERGETEN TIJD. In de stenen muur die het klooster omringd vind je de deur, verveloos en onopvallend. De twee jonge mensen staan je daar al op je te wachten. De deur opent met wat gekraak en gepiep en jullie staan op een smal bospad. Dat pad volgt de buitenzijde van het klooster en duikt dan het dichte gebladerte van het bos in. Wanneer je je na een tijdje lopen omdraait, zie je in de verte het verstilde dorp. De geluiden van de wereld - een motorzaag, geklop van een hamer, een roepend kind - vervagen en worden geabsorbeerd door de stilte.

Bij een splitsing van het pad - je zou er zo aan voorbij zijn gelopen - zegt de jonge man: rechtdoor gaat het verder naar het convent van Codiponte, we gaan hier naar rechts. Vlakbij de splitsing staat een enorme kastanje, met een holle basis , waaruit een groot aantal stammen zijn gegroeid. Je blijft staan, verbeeld je het? Als je door je wimpers heen kijkt, lijkt het een bosgeest, met een verwarde bos haar, een wilde baard en opengesperde mond, een stille schreeuw. Een ent uit de Lord of the Rings, Boombaard? Is dit de wachter bij entree van het oude bos? Nee, je verbeeld je het. Toch dorst je geen foto te maken van deze bizarre verschijning. De twee jongen mensen waren doorgelopen en je loopt nu wat sneller om ze bij te halen. Ze hebben zeker niets gemerkt van je ingebeelde ontmoeting met de oude boom.

Nog een paar minuten lopen jullie verder. Het gesprek is verstild. Ik weet het, de atmosfeer van plek waar jullie halt houden, laat zich moeilijk beschrijven, dus dat probeer ik dan ook maar niet. Jullie gaan gedrieën met de rug tegen de stam van een van de woudmeesters zitten. De zon kan nauwelijks door het dikke bladerdek heen kan dringen, het licht is zacht en groen. Deze tijd is de tijd van de bomen. Hoe lang jullie er gezeten hebben?

Op de terugweg, wanneer jullie de wachter passeren, geef je een verborgen knikje met je hoofd, als teken van respect, Je weet per slot van rekening maar nooit. Maar de jonge vrouw zag je heimelijke geste, jullie blikken kruisen elkaar. Ze glimlacht en knipoogt. Zou ze de wachter ook kennen?

Wanneer jullie Il Convento weer naderen, pakken jullie het gesprek weer op, op hetzelfde punt waar het op de heenweg was verstomd.

VERVLOGEN TIJD. Nu ik je reis heb naverteld, of je hebt geïnspireerd om die binnenkort te maken, kunnen we verder praten. Ik ken de weg die begint bij Aulla goed. Ik herinner de honderd bochten tot aan het kleine middeleeuwse dorp. En de eerste overnachting in Il Convento. Dat was 1999. De daarop volgende ochtend maakten we een wandeling en - was het toeval, was het de tover van de verveloze houten deur - we vonden het oude bos. We zaten geleund tegen een bejaarde kastanje, in stilte, was het een uur, was het langer? Het was duidelijk, dit was de juiste plek om een jaarlijkse chi kung zomerschool te organiseren. In 2000 de eerste en in de jaren erna zouden er nog een vijftiental volgen.

TREE TIME. Deelnemers kwamen uit alle richtingen: IJsland, Zweden, Finland, Denemarken, Engeland, Duitsland, Nederland, Belgie, Frankrijk, Polen, Spanje, Portugal, Oostenrijk, Zwitserland, Amerika, Italië en natuurlijk Nederland. Minstens één maal tijdens iedere zomerschool, in de namiddag, zodra de warmte van de Italiaanse zomer wat tot bedaren was gekomen, verzamelden we bij de houten deur in de buitenmuur van het klooster. Piepend open, iedereen er doorheen, piepend weer dicht. Vrolijk keuvelend volgden we dan hetzelfde smalle pad waarop jij, met Shirin en Aaron, de twee jonge mensen, hebt gelopen. Ter hoogte van de splitsing en de wachter had het onbezorgde gepraat steevast zijn volume verloren en als we uiteindelijk het oudste stuk van het kastanjebos bereikten, was dat helemaal stil gevallen. Niet omdat dat zo afgesproken was - we werden waarschijnlijk opgenomen in de tijdschaal die bomen eigen is. Praten wordt dan moeizamer, eigenlijk overbodig. Tree time, precies, dat is de goede benaming.

De chi kung beoefening in het oude kastanjebos bestond er voor sommigen uit eenvoudig te zitten, met de rug tegen een boom. Anderen gingen voor een moment op de zachte grond liggen en vielen in een diepe slaap. En er waren er natuurlijk ook bij die de chi kung in een meer herkenbare vorm beoefenden. Maar allen ervoeren een vanzelfsprekendheid, een moeiteloosheid. Alsof het regent en je geen moeite hoeft te doen om nat te worden. Aanwezig zijn is dan voldoende.

TIJDLOOS. De ouders van Shirin en Aaron, Martina Weber en Marcel Müller, die de Convento over de jaren heen in een onverstoorbaar ritme hadden herbouwd, zorgden jaar na jaar voor warme gastvrijheid. Zij boden de perfecte voorwaardes voor intense chi kung studie. De eerste maal dat ik hen bezocht waren hun kinderen klein. Nu zijn die volwassen en de initiators van een terugkerend zomerfestival in en rond Il Convento.

There are time slots for walking from one village to another, and everything you would have liked to do spontaneously has to be booked long in advance. BORROWED TIME. In La Spezia, you have an hour. It is now late afternoon and the train to Aulla will leave a bit later. Outside the station you find a small park. And what suits you nicely, there is a free bench. The dull rhythm of airport, plane, station and train is still under your skin, and how good it is to simply sit and look around. You don't know anyone here, no one knows you, you have no obligation, and the train to travel on is not here yet. Was it long ago that you had nothing to worry about and didn't get nervous about that? Was it long since you could observe freely? There to your left, an old man approaches, shuffling along. A friendly old gentleman, grey, slightly stooped. For a moment freed from the compulsive restlessness of doing, you can see beyond the limitation of the single moment. You see today's old man and you see the young fellow he was yesterday. Why creating separations and denying the one the naughty pranks and dreams and the other the wisdom? You see young in old and old in young.

ELAPSED TIME. In Aulla, a small nondescript town in the Magra valley, you are picked up. A vital, tanned man is waiting for you outside the station, leaning against a jeep, that has clearly been through a lot. He introduces himself to you: no, he is not Italian, but actually he is. Originally from Switzerland, he has lived here most of his life. You hit the road and that road leaves the sleepy town, into the hills. Your driver seems to be able to dream the route and does not skimp on speed. There is nothing to do but trust his steering.

If you look from the side at his hands, which loosely encompass the steering wheel, it is clear that they have been doing labor. And if your eyes discretely wander down, you see that he is driving a car with no shoes on. When he notices your searching eyes, he smiles. 'The other day I was stopped, routine check, by the carabinieri. I don't think they had experienced that before, a barefoot driver. 'That's not allowed, signore, please, shoes on behind the wheel.’ I complied, but you just drive much better without them, you have much more feeling with the car.'

Meanwhile, you drive through wooded hills, here and there a village, a group of talking people, a river, a bridge, trees, trees everywhere. A sharp turn and then steep uphill and we stop in front of the old monastery. He switches off the engine, we open the doors, get out, the engine hums and ticks. It is silent.

TWISTED TIME. Throughout history, in all cultures, trees held a special place and it is no different today. Yes, yes, surely you mean in the form of lumber and Christmas tree plantations? Ireland and Portugal were covered in oak forest, all of Europe was once one big forest, and look at it now. And just signing petitions to save the forests in the Amazon and Borneo, while here the continent was stripped of its trees long ago. Of course, there are forests allowed on this continent, as long as the trees stand nicely in rows next to each other and quickly provide straight lumber.

Our society worships youth. Fresh cheeks, tight body, youthful attractiveness. Everything possible is done to avoid wrinkles and, above all, to preserve the body as untouched as possible. Imagine what it would be like: on all billboards, in TV advertising, old wrinkled faces and aged bodies displayed to advertise products. It could be reality, in a distant future, old age and weathered bodies as an ideal to be pursued.

That is exactaly how we observe trees. An ancient lime tree, a rare old specimen, a fence around it, a placard with his history and what he has witnessed. That tree as a curiosity. In regards to trees it is all about old age, weathering, twistedness. Tell me, you wouldn't go to all the trouble, make a long diversions to go and look at a youthful spindle, straight and lean, with soft flawless skin, and translucent leaves.

How can you become as old as that linden? Definitely not by standing out much, or by trying to be useful.

Carpenter Shi went to Qi and, when he got to Crooked Shaft, he saw a serrate oak standing by the village shrine. It was broad enough to shelter several thousand oxen and measured a hundred spans around, towering above the hills. The lowest branches were eighty feet from the ground, and a dozen or so of them could have been made into boats.

There were so many sightseers that the place looked like a fair, but the carpenter didn’t even glance around and went on his way without stopping. His apprentice stood staring for a long time and then ran after Carpenter Shi and said, ‘Since I first took up my ax and followed you, Master, I have never seen timber as beautiful as this. But you don’t even bother to look, and go right on without stopping. Why is that?’

’Forget it—say no more!’ said the carpenter. ‘It’s a worthless tree! Make boats out of it and they’d sink; make coffins and they’d rot in no time; make vessels and they’d break at once. Use it for doors and it would sweat sap like pine; use it for posts and the worms would eat them up. It’s not a timber tree—there’s nothing it can be used for. That’s how it got to be that old!’

After Carpenter Shi had returned home, the oak tree appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘What are you comparing me with? Are you comparing me with those useful trees? The cherry apple, the pear, the orange, the citron, the rest of those fructiferous trees and shrubs—as soon as their fruit is ripe, they are torn apart and subjected to abuse. Their big limbs are broken off, their little limbs are yanked around. Their utility makes life miserable for them, and so they don’t get to finish out the years Heaven gave them, but are cut off in mid-journey. They bring it on themselves—the pulling and tearing of the common mob. And it’s the same way with all other things.’

‘As for me, I’ve been trying a long time to be of no use, and though I almost died, I’ve finally got it. This is of great use to me. If I had been of some use, would I ever have grown this large? Moreover you and I are both of us things. What’s the point of this—things condemning things? You, a worthless man about to die—how do you know I’m a worthless tree?’

When Carpenter Shi woke up, he reported his dream. His apprentice said, ‘If it’s so intent on being of no use, what’s it doing there at the village shrine?’

‘Shhh! Say no more! It’s only resting there. If we carp and criticize, it will merely conclude that we don’t understand it. Even if it weren’t at the shrine, do you suppose it would be cut down? It protects itself in a different way from ordinary people. If you try to judge it by conventional standards, you’ll be way off!’

TIME LINE. You wake up early. Everything in this monastery breathes history. The robust stone walls, the ruins of what was once a chapel, the pavement of the forecourt. You don't know it, so I whisper it in your ear: this was once a refuge for pilgrims on the road to Rome. Sure enough, all roads lead there, and the closer you get to the eternal city, the more all those roads have come together, like the tiny veins converge in the large central vein of a leaf.

UNSPECIFIED TIME. This morning at breakfast, you met the wife of yesterday's jeep driver. The latter, incidentally, turned out to be the owner of the old monastery. Found as a ruin and rebuilt into what it is today. Ah, that's where the penny drops - those working hands, you had noticed them during the drive. And so this woman is the owner as well. Her gaze is intense, her appearance earthy. 'I wasn't born here either,' she told me, but by now I belong here. I ended up in Italy at the time, by chance, in Pontremoli, as a member of a theatre group. Do you know Pontremoli? It's not far from here, also in the Lunigiana. We took a walk around the area, came into the old chestnut forest and that made it all clear. This was without a doubt the right place to stay.'

‘To get into the old chestnut forest, you also have to know where to enter. In the past, when this whole area was more populated, there were countless paths running through the woods, over the hills, from village to village. Paths used by porcini pickers in autumn, and chestnut gatherers. Now, if you walk into the forest, randomly, just from somewhere along the road, you won’t come far. Brambles, prickly plants, tough bushes, there is no way through. Go there and have a look. I can't go with you myself today, but my children are here and can show you the way.'

Just as Harry Potter had go to King's Cross, platform nine three-quarters, where he had to pass a wall in a rather unusual way, all in order to travel to Hogwarts, the entrance to the ancient forest is located at an unexpected place.

FORGOTTEN TIME. In the stone wall that surrounds the monastery you find the door, colourless and inconspicuous. The two young people are already there waiting for you. The door opens with some creaking and squeaking and you are standing on a narrow forest path. That path follows the outside of the monastery and then dives into the dense foliage of the forest. When you turn around after walking for a while, you see the hushed village in the distance. The sounds of the world - a power saw, the knock of a hammer, a crying child - fade away and are absorbed by the silence.

At a fork in the path - you would have walked right past it - the young man says: ‘straight ahead it continues to the convent of Codiponte, we turn right here.’ Near the fork is a huge chestnut, with a hollow base, from which a large number of stems have grown. You remain standing, is it your imagination? Looking through your lashes, it seems a forest spirit, with a tangled bunch of hair, a wild beard and open mouth, a silent scream. An ent from the Lord of the Rings, Treebeard. Is this the guard at the entrance to the ancient forest? No, your fantasy is to vivid. Still, you don't dare take a picture of this bizarre apparition. The two young people have moved on and you now walk a little faster to catch up. They certainly haven’t notice anything about your imagined encounter with the old tree.

For a few more minutes, you walk on. The conversation is hushed. I know, the atmosphere of the place where you stop is hard to describe, so I won't try. The three of you sit with your backs against the trunk of one of the forest masters. The sun can barely penetrate the thick foliage, the light is dappled and green. This time is the time of the trees. How long you sat there?

On the way back, as you pass the guard, you give a hidden nod of your head, as a sign of respect, After all, you never know. But the young woman saw your furtive gesture, your gazes cross. She smiles and winks. Would she know the guard too?

As you approach Il Convento again, you pick up the conversation again, at the same point where it had died down on the way out.

THE TIME GONE BY. Now that I have retold your journey, or inspired you to make it soon, we can talk further. I know the road that starts at Aulla well. I remember the hundred curves up to the small medieval village. And the first night's stay at Il Convento. That was 1999. The following morning we took a walk and - was it a coincidence, was it the magic of the wooden door - we found the ancient forest. We sat leaning against an aged chestnut tree, silently, was it an hour, was it longer? It was clear, this was the right place to organise an annual chi kung summer school. The first one in 2000 and about 15 more would follow in the years after.

TREE TIME. Participants came from all directions: Iceland, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, England, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Poland, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Switzerland, America, Italy and, of course, the Netherlands. At least once during each summer school, in the afternoon, once the heat of the Italian summer had calmed down a bit, we gathered at the wooden door in the outer wall of the monastery. Squeak open, everyone through, squeak shut again. Gaily chatting, we then followed the same narrow path on which you, with Shirin and Aaron, the two young people, walked. At the level of the fork and the guard, the carefree chatter had invariably lost its volume, and when we finally reached the oldest part of the chestnut grove, it had fallen completely silent. Not because it was so agreed - we were probably absorbed into the time scale peculiar to trees. Talking then becomes more laborious, actually redundant. Tree time, exactly, that the right term.

For some, chi kung practice in the ancient chestnut forest consisted of sitting simply, with their backs against a tree. Others lay down for a moment on the soft ground and fell into a deep sleep. And there were, of course, some who practiced chi kung in a more recognizable form. But all experienced a naturalness, an effortlessness. Like when it rains and you don't have to make an effort to get wet. Being present is enough.

TIMELESS. Shirin and Aaron's parents, Martina Weber and Marcel Müller, who have rebuilt the Convento over the years at an unruffled pace, provided warm hospitality year after year. They offered the perfect conditions for intense chi kung study. The first time I visited them, their children were small. Now they are adults and the initiators of a recurring summer festival in and around Il Convento.

The Zen Buddhist tradition of China and Japan has produced a simple illustrated tale: 'The Ten Pictures of the Ox ' or also 'The Taming of the Ox'. The author is the Chinese Zen master Guo-An Shi-yyuan, called Kakuan in Japanese, who lived in the 12th century. It is drawn and written allegory of the challenges the Zen practitioner is bound to encounter on the spiritual path. The situations depicted through the ten drawings and their short accompanying texts were and are easily recognised.

But not only the practitioner of meditation can draw inspiration and encouragement from the tale of the little ox herder and the giant ox. The chi kung practitioner can also benefit from the colourful description of the stages of inner cultivation. All kinds of difficulties that may arise in fathoming posture, breath, habits, and emotion are reflected in the process of taming the ox.

In the first picture, you see a little boy, an ox herd. He has lost his ox. It is his responsibility, his job, to be with the ox all day long - to lead it to juicy grass and drinking water, to take good care of it in everything and to bring it back to the stable in the evening. But now he has not only lost the ox - he has even forgotten WHAT he has lost. Without clearly knowing what he is actually looking for, he has set off on his journey.

In picture two, the boy makes an important discovery: for the first time, he sees traces of the ox. He has not yet discovered the ox itself, but he now has at least an idea of what he is looking for. This first encounter with the ox, even if it concerned only his traces, makes a great impression on the boy and gives him strong motivation to continue the quest.

Finally, after long searching and sleuthing, the boy finds the ox. He sees him in all his colossal size and imposing strength. The ox is stubborn and recalcitrant, but if he could tame him, he would become a powerful companion. But then again, how on earth can you learn to master this primal force?

The fourth picture shows the boy accepting the challenge and actually starting to tame the ox. He pushes and pulls and tries to impose his will on the mighty animal. If he wants to go left, the ox goes right. OK, then it goes to the left, but then the ox walks to the right. When he stops, the ox just keeps on moving, imperturbably. In desperation, he pulls the ox behind him with all his might, it now stands motionless still. No, this is clearly not the right method to tame an ox. This is no way to approach this primal beast. The boy sees that he has to learn to listen and that impatience and force-feeding will get him nowhere.

Step by step, he understands what he should and should not do. Instead of trying to dominate the ox with willpower, he starts making contact. Physical closeness and a growing mutual trust gradually begin to bear fruit. It is a demanding and time-consuming process, but the path of taming the ox has been found.

Then, in the sixth picture, you see the boy sitting on the ox's back, cross-legged, making music, with no fear of falling off. The ox is no longer an opponent to fight or a force of nature to overcome. The boy sits quietly on his back and the ox willingly carries him home.

Home again. The boy sits on the pavement in front of his house, on the threshold of his door. The ox is gone. The boy realised that the ox and himself were never essentially separate. Taming the ox was necessary to fathom himself. It brought him back to himself, brought him home. In fact, the phases of searching, finding, fighting and following were all aimed at recognising his own inner power and urges and taming them.

The archetypal eighth picture is an enso, an empty circle. In the seventh picture, the ox had already disappeared - in this picture, so has the boy. If the chosen discipline was already relative, not of absolute value, in the larger perspective, so are the person and his life path. The boy returned home, even though he had never really left it. He came to an insight that had been within him before his search. A circle came full circle.

In the penultimate picture, you see a stream, a flowering tree, birds singing. Look carefully around you, you don't have to go far - indeed you don't have to go anywhere at all. All around you - and inside you - is life. The origin of things is always here, close by.

Picture ten shows a fat, happy monk. A free spirit, a homeless wanderer - at least someone who lives without excuses and complications. Without boasting any particular philosophy or humanity, he shares his food with others and helps where he can. A cheerful Samaritan. A good-humoured market trader. If you are lucky enough to have met him once, it makes you think. You may realise that you have lost sight of your ox and that you should go and find it.

One of the renowned masters of the I Chuan 意拳 / Da Cheng Chuan 大成拳 tradition is Guo Gui-Zhi, from Datong, Shanxi, in northern China.

Guo Gui-Zhi started his martial training at an early age and soon proved talented. Due to a serious medical condition, he came into contact with Professor Yu Yong-Nian, who instructed him in the practice of 'zhan zhuang chi kung', the foundation of I Chuan. The 'zhan zhuang' had not only proven itself as a key to martial application, but could also be used therapeutically. Professor Yu had been instrumental in introducing it within hospitals in the post-war years. Guo Gui-Zhi's 'zhan zhuang ' practice resulted in a recovery, which motivated him to continue training under Professor Yu. The latter put him in touch with his own teacher, I Chuan founder Wang Xiang-Zhai. After the latter's death, Guo continued training under another top student of Wang Xiang-Zhai, Yao Zong-Xun.

Master Guo Guxi-Zhi's school is based in Datong. He also attracted many foreign students and was invited several times for trainings in Europe and Canada.

With the greatest ease, and often the greatest pleasure, you lose yourself, while reading, in this dot. Like a magnet, it draws your eyes to it, demanding all your attention. The physical spaces behind you and those to your sides come to fallow. Nadir and zenith? Spatial awareness is scaled down, as long as you keep peering at the letters.

Losing contact with one's surroundings in such a way was a death sentence in the wild life of our ancestors. Reading in the wild, with all the lurking danger, was like making love and getting drunk without the protection of four walls, a risky activity.

Break away from reading and letters for a while. Look out the window, or take a short walk as a pause. With your eyes freed, the small yellow zone unfolds into a landscape. As if stage curtains are pulled aside. The vision may not be as sharp as reading letter and dot, but the view is wide. It extends from the corners of your eyes to diagonally behind you.

And the space all the way behind your back? To look there, you have to turn around. A hare, a pigeon, or a sheep does not have to do that. With eyes on the side of the head, they have panoramic vision. Without having to turn their heads, they are prepared for danger from any direction.

Predators' eyes are at the front of their heads and their gaze is sharp, seeing prey from a great distance. To hunt or to be hunted - a panoramic vision or a sharp, piercing gaze. Those two traits seem to characterize the division of roles in nature. There are predators with both visual qualities, sharp and wide, but a predator with sideways sheep-like eyes has not yet been seen.

And humans? Does his vision tell the story of a hunter or a hunted?

However, the hunting instinct and murderous gaze can be reactivated by an irritating fly instantly.

But an opponent with a 360° vision is not easy to outsmart.

A martial art where you only have to deal with one opponent, who is right in front of you, and who also acts according to the prescribed rules, is not a martial art, it is a sport. Back and flanks, all directions except those where the eyes are focused, can remain unprotected.

TWO AND THREE
Softening your gaze even more, the horizon will widen before you. Straight ahead of you is still the ship - from the corner of your eye, you can see the beach and row of dunes to the right and left. Without turning your head, you can see 180°degrees from the horizon. Be aware of the space in front of you, to your left and to your right: those are three of the six directions.

FOUR
If you turned around, you would see that the horizon continues behind you. But now, without turning your body, your head or your eyes, try to be aware of this territory. Your body is the centre of the compass rose. When you are facing west, your eyes see the semicircle of the horizon, from north to south. The horizon closes behind your back, to the east. The earth is round, the horizon is round, your spatial awareness is round.

FIVE
Imagine a small cloud directly overhead. This fifth direction. the zenith, turns your surrounding horizon into a dome. You are exactly in the centre of the dome, right below its highest point.

Your surroundings like a huge circus tent. A grand-café filled with talking people - close your eyes and the murmur of their voices surrounds you. A space like the Duomo in Florence, where you stand exactly in the centre of the mosaic floor, under the highest part of the dome. The sound of footsteps and the gentle chatter of visitors will trace the five directions for you.

Five directions within your field of vision, when was the last time that happened to you? With hard eyes, you won't succeed. With softness, you can perceive the whole vault - four cardinal points and the zenith at once.

It is no wonder that in a myopic world, a world where the horizon has been bricked away behind stone walls, words like 'firmament' and 'welkin' have fallen into disuse. While in the 1960s it was chalked on walls that under the pavement was the beach, now is the time to realise that the vastness and the horizon have obviously not disappeared. You just have to learn to see through walls and roof.

SIX
Finally, let your attention go to the ground on which, the floor on which you stand. The space under your body, does not stop at the surface of the floor. If zenith was the fifth direction, nadir is the sixth.

At the front of your body, imagine a two-metre space. Do the same on the left side and on your right side. Then behind your body a similar space. Also above your head, towards the dome, the zenith, two metres. And finally a two metres space under your feet, into the ground, towards the nadir.

Your spatial awareness takes the shape of a perfect balloon. Each of the six directions that define the balloon are equal. The size of the balloon is by choice. En nog iets verder weg van de letter waar je ogen nu ingespannen naar turen, daar lijkt alles zelfs verdwenen. De ruimte links en rechts van je, de ruimte achter je rug, en die boven en onder je - in de richting van plafond en vloer - je verliest ze al lezend uit het oog. De concentratie die nodig is om de letters met je ogen te vangen, reduceert je driedimensionale omgeving tot een kleine stip. Het ruimtelijk bewustzijn samengetrokken in een punt, zoals die aan het einde van deze zin.

Met het grootste gemak, en vaak ook met het grootste plezier, verlies je je, al lezend, in deze stip. Als een magneet trekt het de ogen naar zich toe, alle aandacht opeisend. Op zo'n manier het contact met de omgeving kwijtraken, was in het wilde leven van onze voorouders een doodvonnis. Lezen in het vrije veld, met al het rondsluipend gevaar, was net zoals de liefde bedrijven en dronken worden zonder de bescherming van vier muren, een riskante bezigheid.

Breek even los van het lezen en de letters. Kijk uit het raam, of maak bij wijze van pauze een korte wandeling. Met je ogen bevrijd, ontvouwt zich de kleine gele zone tot een landschap. Alsof toneelgordijnen terzijde worden getrokken. Het zicht is weliswaar niet zo scherp als bij het lezen van letter en punt, maar het zicht is breed. Het loopt vanuit je ooghoeken door tot schuin achter je.

En de ruimte helemaal achter je rug? Om daar te kijken, moet je je omdraaien. Een haas, een duif of een schaap hoeft dat niet te doen. Met ogen aan de zijkant van de kop hebben ze een panorama visie. Zonder hun kop te hoeven draaien zijn ze voorbereid op gevaar vanuit iedere richting.

De ogen van rovers liggen voorin hun kop en hun blik is scherp, van grote afstand zien ze een prooi. Jagen of gejaagd worden - een panorama visie of een scherpe priemende blik. Die twee eigenschappen lijken de rolverdeling in de natuur te karakteriseren. Er zijn rovers met beide visuele kwaliteiten, scherp en breed, maar een rover met zijwaartse schaapachtige ogen is nog niet gezien.

En de mens? Vertelt zijn visie het verhaal van een jager of een gejaagde?

Het jachtinstinct en de moorddadige blik kunnen echter door een irritante vlieg gereactiveerd worden.

Maar een opponent met een 360° visie is niet eenvoudig te verschalken.

Een krijgskunst waarbij je slechts met één opponent van doen hebt, die recht voor je staat, en die ook nog eens handelt volgens de voorgeschreven regels, is geen krijgskunst, dat is een sport. Rug en flanken, alle richtingen behalve die waar de ogen op gericht zijn, kunnen onbeschermd blijven.

Een krijgskunde die het dagelijkse leven reflecteert, en die de beoefenaar voorbereid zijn alertheid te spreiden over zes richtingen, vraagt om zachte ogen.

Stel je een kleine wolk direct boven je hoofd voor. Deze vijfde richting. het zenit, maakt van de je omringende horizon een koepel. Je staat exact in het midden van de koepel, recht onder zijn hoogste punt.

Je omgeving als een enorme circustent. Een met pratende mensen gevuld grand-cafe - sluit je ogen en het geroezemoes van de stemmen overkoepelt je. Een ruimte als de Duomo in Florence, waar je exact in het midden van de mozaïekvloer gaat staan, onder het hoogste deel van de koepel. Het geluid van de voetstappen en het zacht gepraat van de bezoekers zullen de vijf richtingen voor je uittekenen.

Vijf richtingen binnen je blikveld, wanneer overkwam je dat voor het laatst? Met harde ogen gaat je dat niet lukken. Met zachtheid kun je het hele gewelf waarnemen - vier windstreken en het zenit tegelijk.

Het is geen wonder dat in een bijziende wereld, een wereld waar de horizon achter stenen muren is weg gemetseld, woorden als 'uitspansel' en 'zwerk' in onbruik zijn geraakt. Wanneer hebben we het nog over 'firmament' en 'hemelgewelf'? Werd in de zestiger jaren op muren gekalkt dat onder het plaveisel het strand lag, nu is de tijd aangebroken te realiseren dat de weidsheid en de horizon natuurlijk niet verdwenen zijn. Je hoeft alleen maar door muren en dak te leren kijken.

ZES
Laat tot slot je aandacht naar de grond waarop gaan, de vloer waarop je staat. De ruimte onder je lichaam, houdt niet op bij het oppervlak van de vloer. Als het zenit de vijfde richting was, is het nadir de zesde.

Stel je aan de voorzijde van je lichaam een ruimte van twee meter voor. Doe hetzelfde aan de linkerzijde en aan je rechterzijde. Vervolgens achter je lichaam een ruimte van twee meter. Dan boven je hoofd, in de richting van de koepel, het zenit, twee meter. En tenslotte een ruimte van twee meter onder je voeten, de grond in, in de richting van het nadir.

Je ruimtelijk bewustzijn neemt de vorm aan van een perfecte ballon. Ieder van de zes richtingen die de ballon definiëren zijn gelijkwaardig. De grootte van de ballon is naar keus. Staande onder de grote kerkkoepel bedraagt de ruimte in iedere richting misschien dertig meter, staande op de duintop wel honderd, of strekt zich uit tot aan de horizon. In alle gevallen is je lichaam het midden van de ballon. Of specifieker: het exacte centrum van de zes richtingen is je buik, de onderste dan tian, xia dan tian, 下丹田. Het ruimtelijk bewustzijn via zes richtingen, de praktijk van zachte ogen en het vinden en consolideren van het lichaamscentrum zijn hiermee aan elkaar verbonden.
